Science Tour – Meet the scientists who shaped Denmark

Meet the pioneers of Denmark, starting with the natural philosophers who lived a very different life in the Middle Ages.

Science has a huge influence on our lives – and Danish history is full of scientists with interesting and gripping lives. On this science tour, we will zoom in on the pioneers of Denmark, starting with the natural philosophers who lived a very different life in the Middle Ages.

Later, with the Renaissance, enlightenment, and industrialisation came new theories, methods, and needs, and fostered great thinkers who contributed to breakthroughs all over the world, including several Nobel Prize winners.

We have selected 10 Danish scientists who had global influence, and we unfold stories and anecdotes about the science community of their time in Denmark starting from 1164 up to the millennium.

Among them Nicolaus Steno who in his short life made large contributions to physiology and geology before he became a bishop, Sophie Brahe who was as good an astronomer as her famous brother Tycho Brahe, and Niels Bohr who contributed to both the understanding of the atom and quant physics and ended up playing an important role in the cold war.
